Kidambi Srikanth: A strong hope for a medal in Rio

The Guntur-born Kidambi Srikanth made a splash on the international circuit in 2013, when he won the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold. Badminton aficionados in India rubbed their hands in glee as they felt there was something special in the young lad. Here was a young Indian on the circuit with the game and the temperament to win titles on the big stage. A naturally attacking player, Srikanth has the ability to play according to the situation and believes that consistency is key.

As per chief national coach Pullela Gopichand, Srikanth still needs to improve on the mental aspect of his game and has scope for improvement. This is in no way bad as he is still young and can potentially be future world no. 1. Here’s a look at the achievements in his fledgling career so far:

The 22-year old is the highest ranked Indian in the world and is the current world no.5, which is noteworthy especially considering the age factor. He also boasts of a career-high ranking of number 3, which he achieved in mid-2015.

He is the first Indian to win a Super Series Men’s Premier title when he upset the legendary Lin Dan to win the China Open in 2014.

In 2015, he became the first Indian to win the Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold.

Has won four titles at the professional level and looks like India’s best bet for winning the Olympic medals and more.
