Mithali doubles down at the ISH Awards

Mithali Raj continued to show why she is the greatest female cricketer India has ever produced, as she bagged dual awards at the Indian Sports Honours

It was a star-studded night at the Indian Sports Honours Awards and no one shone brighter than Mithali Raj, the mercurial batswoman who has brought much glory to her sport and country.

The Indian Women’s team’s skipper and her girls made it to the 2017 ICC World Cup final against England, where they fought a close contest, with Mithali racking up a solid 71 against the Brits but unable to avert a crushing loss.

Apart from the SportsWoman of the Year award, the 34-year old from Jodhpur, who recently became the number one ODI batswoman, also bagged the prize for Team of the Year.

Mithali made her cricketing debut at age 16 in 1999, when she hammered home her first century against Ireland, making her the youngest centurion in women’s ODI’s. Since then, she has been dubbed the ‘Sachin Tendulkar of Women’s Cricket’ but the way she is rising, soon men will be dubbed the ‘Mithali Raj of Cricket’!

Apart from being India’s most famous female cricketer, Mithali has inspired many of the country’s women, who are battling various odds, to take up the sport. In fact, a leading motion picture company has acquired the rights for making a movie on her life and she will surely be hoping it inspires more young girls to take up sports as a career.

Mithali and her team will take on South Africa next where they will be hoping to go one better on the momentum they generated from their commendable run in the World Cup. All of India will surely be wishing them the best!
