Gary Neville: From Chilly UK to Sunny Spain
Over the last four years, Gary Neville has been well-known for his honest, in-depth analysis for a popular sports network which has been widely appreciated. His punditry on TV with former arch-rival and England team-mate, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, is one of the most anticipated shows for football fans. Let’s take a look at how his career has panned out in the sport:
CLASS OF ‘92
He is one of the members of Manchester United’s legendary Class of ’92 along with Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and younger brother Phil. A one club man, he was United and England’s premier right back for more than a decade. On the pitch he was known more as a hard-working, tough-as-nails, gritty defender than a gifted footballer. He is England’s highest capped right back with 85 appearances and won a host of titles at Old Trafford, including eight league titles and two European triumphs.
TV’s PREMIER PUNDIT
After joining a popular sports network as an expert, his views and analysis on the game have been widely appreciated by viewers, players and coaches alike. His on-screen partnership with Carragher has been excellent, keeping aside the heated rivalry during their playing days between United and Liverpool. His passion and honesty have once again come to the fore during his stint as a pundit and he has quite a following with former legendary England striker-turned-football pundit Gary Linekar expressing a desire to work with Neville.
CLUB OWNER AND COACH
Neville has also obtained UEFA Pro Coaching Licences and is part of England’s coaching staff as appointed by manager Roy Hodgson. Former team-mate and friend David Beckham publicly hailed the move is known to enjoy this role immensely. Gary also owns a low-rung football club called Salford City along with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt. Billionaire Peter Lim has invested in Salford City and is also the owner of Valencia.
MOVE TO MESTALLA
This connection perhaps helped Lim zero down to Gary Neville as the interim manager with Phil also been coaching the Spanish side since the beginning of the 2015/16 season. Language and cultural barriers along with lack of professional coaching experience will prove to be a hindrance. It is how Neville copes with all this and wins over the players and fans is a massive challenge! Given the zeal, enthusiasm and dedication with which he has approached his earlier assignments, it is very much assured that there won’t be a lack of trying on Neville’s behalf. All eyes will be on him, carefully analysing his every move and not to forget, the board of Manchester United will be watching too!
