Football academies in India are up and coming. A success story that emerged from this project is that of Rajib Roy, a young footballer who rose from the underbelly of Kolkata to get selected by the Manchester United training camp. Rajib’s mother is a sex worker and he feels, with the help of football, he can pull her out of the tough life she lives. Here’s a list of some of the big boys who have joined the cause.

Paris Saint-Germain

This French club needs no introduction. Greats of the game like Ronaldinho, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva have represented PSG. According to the club’s website, PSG’s philosophy is that of “Playing an attractive style of football synonymous with technical excellence, ball possession, blasting attacks and lots of goals! It is the same game philosophy that the Parisian club is applying at youth level in its academies to train the champions of the future.”

Liverpool Football Club

The most successful English team in Europe, Liverpool have won the UEFA Champions League on five occasions. Liverpool has produced some of the finest talents on the global stage like Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.

According to Liverpool International Football Academy, “At LFC we believe our International Football Academies offer something special. Our aim is to provide the youth of India with a platform to show off their potential, learn new skills and techniques in a fun, inclusive and safe environment, all under the guidance of our highly qualified LFC coaching staff.”

F.C. Barcelona

F.C. Barcelona is considered to be the best team of the current decade. The La Masia has consistently produced world class talents like Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol and Lionel Messi.

If there is one club that knows a thing or two about youth development, it is F.C. Barcelona. FCBEscola Delhi is the Catalan club’s seventh international school, and is based out of Heritage School in India’s capital. “We have a successful structure and methodology and I’m confident that it will work here as well. Our aim is always on foundational training -- to make sure each child learns all the basics of technique and teamwork,” says Xavi Merce, director of FCBEscola Delhi. It has a capacity for around 300 students between 6 and 14 years of age.
