Qualified For Olympics 2016
The Indian Women’s Team have secured their qualification for the 2016 Olympics which will be held in Rio, Brazil after a gap of 36 years. The berth was confirmed after Spain lost to England in the Unibet Euro Hockey Championships.
Against The Odds
Most of the players in the team have come through various hardships - whether it would be financial or even going against family wishes to play the sport. This issue still exists in the country, so the women must be applauded for making it this far.
The Women’s team looks set to have a bright future with a good wave of talent coming through the Junior Women’s Hockey team. Players such as Rani Rampal, who made her debut for India at the age of 15 and plays for both Junior and senior teams, along with the likes of Deep Grace Ekka, Jaspreet Kaur, and Punam Barla.
Women’s hockey is really gathering pace with impressive performances in the Spain tour, finishing third in Volvo Invitational U-21 tournament, a hard fought 4th place in the Fintro Hockey World League semi final, and also champions of the Hockey World league round 2.
Junior Asia Cup Performance
The junior women’s team reached the semi-finals of the 7th Women’s Junior Asia Cup before losing to Japan. They managed to score a staggering 36 goals in only 4 games finishing 2nd in the group table.
Remember ‘Chak De’
Indian Women’s hockey enjoyed a winning spell back in 2002-04 which also inspired the movie ‘Chak De’. The current team looks to be following in the same footsteps led by Ritu Rani as Suraj Lata Devi did back in 2002.
