It’s time to rejoice for hockey fans across India as the top teams of the world will be in the country for the Hero Hockey World League (HWL) Final 2015! The high profile tournament will mark the end of (FIH) International Hockey Federation’s Hockey World League which began in July 2014.
Here are some fascinating facts about this tournament, touted by many as the biggest hockey event of the year:
Presence Of Biggies
The tournament will feature the world’s top ranked teams who qualified through the HWL semi-finals in Buenos Aires and Antwerp. They include World No.1 Australia, Netherlands (2), Germany (3), Belgium (4), Great Britain (5), Argentina (6), hosts India (8) and Canada (13).
The Second Edition
The 2014–15 Men's FIH Hockey World League Final will be the 2nd edition of the Finals of the FIH Hockey World League. It will take place from 28 November to 6 December 2015 in Raipur, India. A total of 8 teams will compete for the title.
The Rio Connect
The Semi-Final of this competition also served as a qualifier for the 2016 Summer Olympics as the 6 highest placed teams, apart from the host nation, and the five continental champions booked their spots for Rio.
It’s intriguing to know that the Semi-Final of the 2012-13 edition of the Hockey World League served as the qualifiers for the 2014 Men’s & Women’s Hockey World Cup while the venue for the final was Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.
Clash Of The Titans
Reigning Hockey World League champions Netherlands will begin their title defence against London 2012 Olympic gold medallists and 2014 Hero Champions Trophy winners Germany on the opening day of competition, following the match between Argentina and hosts India.
A First For Raipur
The event will be held in the newly built Raipur International Hockey Stadium with a seating capacity of 3,000 spectators. This will be the first multi-nation competition to be staged at the stadium and in the city!
