The unstoppable force that is SanTina
The 2015 WTA Doubles Team of the Year went in to the final at Melbourne on the back of a 35-match winning streak and as strong favourites. They definitely lived up to the billing. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis dominated opponents, having lost only one set en route the final. Their semi-final encounter against Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova was the perfect example of their synergy, with a destructive 6-0, 6-1 victory!
SanTina set up a final with Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, the seventh seeds. The Czech duo fought valiantly breaking their opponents' serve in both sets. Eventually, the experience and class of Mirza and Hingis powered them to a hard fought 7-6, 6-3 win. They are in sight of the all-time record of 44 wins set by Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova in 1990.
Martina Hingis had a few words to say about her sizzling on-court chemistry with Sania Mirza, "Thanks Sania, I wouldn't be here on this court without you. We had already won two Grand Slams and you have pushed us to the limit. Hopefully, we can return and try and defend the title next year."
The Swiss veteran played through pain and needed a medical time out to treat her right shoulder after the first set.
Set to appear again on court later in the evening for her mixed doubles semifinals partnering Ivan Dodig, Sania Mirza was full of praise for the veteran, "Most importantly I want to thank my partner. She just keeps going and going as an amazing champion. She's also an amazing person and it's a privilege for me to play with her," she said
Sania Mirza also took time to acknowledge her competitors' effort, “I lost a Grand Slam final to you guys (2011 French Open). So I knew it would be tough. I'd like to congratulate you on a great two weeks and I'm sure we will face each other again soon.”
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have won three Grand Slams in a row and there seems to be no stopping them now.
