Getting your serve right

There are the basic steps that are involved in getting a good serve in:


Grip

Gripping the racquet correctly is very important. The way one holds a racquet decides whether the serve is going to go in or not. The most widely used is the ‘continental’ grip which helps with the other shots as well without having to change their grip.


Stance

During serve, one has to stand behind the baseline with the size of the body towards your opponent. It is often called as the ‘trophy’ stance. The stance is fundamental to getting the ball toss right along with the correct racquet swing.


Ball Toss

The simple action of tossing the ball if not done correctly can completely send your serve for a toss! It is important that the ball goes up straight and doesn’t move or wobble as that can make your serve go completely awry.


Racquet Swing

As the ball is tossed up, the arm swings back with the lower body helping it do so to generate power for the forward swing, making sure one can get enough pace on the serve.

Serving in tennis involves rhythmic movement of the entire body. One arm to toss the ball up and the other doing the hitting. The neck and shoulders also come into play here along with the back, hips and legs. Doing exercises that help with this movement can greatly help in getting your serve right.


Follow Through

After serving, it is important to have a follow through, which is a forward movement that is a part of serving and helps in reducing stress on the body and transferring power into the serve.
