The International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) is a new, novel concept of tennis stars playing together for a city-based team. A concept now in its second season after an encouraging start in 2014, we take a look at why the IPTL makes for a very interesting and entertaining watch:
Tennis Tapping Fans In Asia
There are five franchises based in the Asian cities of Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore, Tokyo and Manila, with the main intention to increase the popularity of tennis in Asia. It’s commendable as the crowd in these cities are exposed to world-class players of the past, present and future playing some top-notch tennis.
Galaxy Of Stars
We get to watch the biggest stars right from the likes of Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Kei Nishikori and Indians like Leander Paes, Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna to name a few. What’s more, we also get to watch retired superstars like Marat Safin, Goran Ivanisevic, Carlos Moya and Mark Philippoussis in action!
Tennis With A Twist
The format of the game is a little twisted to make the game more interesting. Each game between the teams is of five sets with each set being played by a different players. Each of the five sets will be of different type divided into men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles, men’s doubles and men’s legend singles.
Innovations In The Game
There are plenty of new introductions to the game in IPTL with use of substitutions, no deuces, power point, shot clock, coin toss and more. These give an additional dimension to the game making it more exciting and cerebral.
The India Connect
The Indian franchise is called the Micromax Indian Aces who won the inaugural title last year. The team included legends of the game like Roger Federer and Pete Sampras along with Ana Ivanovic, Gael Monfils, Fabrice Santoro, with the Indian flavour provided by Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. This year, Rafael Nadal, Agnieszka Radwanska and Ivan Dodic will be a part of the team replacing Federer, Sampras and Ivanovic. They will be playing three matches in New Delhi from December 10-14 and it will be exciting for Indian audiences to watch players of such calibre turning out in our own country.
